Right, Chris.

I have a connection with Maezumi, too.

I'd sat with Maezumi himself a number of times, when he visited his successor,
Bernie Glassman (then still Sensei) at Riverdale, New York. I took the train
uptown from Columbia and walked across after the stop at 215th street into
Riverdale, about a mile. Some nights, I had to jog, to be on time. I sat at
both Bernie's places, the original one in 1980, and then the new, more "ritzy"
one, in Greystone Manor (Seminary).

I am eternally grateful for Maezumi instilling in me his word -- mine, now --
"Appreciation." So much so, that, now, 32 years later, if someone were to wake
me up out of a sound sleep, and shake me, SHAKE me, and ask, "WHAT'S it all
about, WHAT'S it all ABOUT?!, I would answer, "Appreciation!!". Then hit
him/her.

John Daido Loori was another friend, made a teacher by Maezumi in L.A. I knew
him in NY, around Bernie's place, during 1980-1982. We became rather close: we
were both photographers, and practitioners, and scientists (well, he was an ex-
Chemist). I helped edit one of his books, with another editor. He was very
generous, with his teaching and his hospitality. But my teacher was Sheng Yen,
and he knew this. I helped him get the center going at Mount Tremper New York
in 1980 and 1981. Earliest days, there! Sat the first sits, there, just
stragglers from the City, who came in, because of Lex Hixon's radio show, "In
The Spirit", on WBAI-99.5, one of the Pacifica Network, Listener-Supported
Free-Speech Radio, Stations.

We had what was called "The Warm-Up Weekend", at the Mt. Tremper property, just
after John bought it from the Catholic community,to see if there was interest
to form a Zen Arts and Practice community, there. There was. What a success!

I had to leave to carry out research in the Andes, alas; but, again, my teach'
was Sheng Yen, so I prob. would not have lived at Mt. Tremper, despite my
affinity with John. What a fine and sensitive teacher. R.I.P. A great
lineage. Owe them lots.
