JMJM,
I think it's a beautiful statement.
You have seen, probably, how it is necessary to continue the practice of
samadhi. Of course, samadhi itself is more a "result" than a practice, but it
must be continued. It is this "rest", and return, that allows the original
mind or original spirit to remain un-covered, and not entirely covered or
obliterated by the busy actions of a conscious mind. As we become more
resilient, though, and experienced with this, as you know, we can do our
mathematics very clearly and well, and yet return. Our original nature is not
scared-away by the activity; and, neither is our ability to move the mind
disabled by Samadhi-state. We can use things freely! I am preaching to the
choir to you, JMJM, I know, but I like saying these things.
Some ask, "what is Samadhi?"
One very quick and expedient, expeditious, answer for the impatient is to say
that it is falling asleep with your eyes open. But neither this nor other
expressions I can "think" of express the essence of it. I suppose Hindu Yogis
call it "trance", and make positive statements about the distinct and very
obvious activity and role of the third eye. And the lowering or centering of
the center of gravity of consciousness and of the body in the tan tien. Ch'an
people are wisely not technicians of the details of these appointments and
functions, I think, but wisely and usually quietly accept them as part of our
original human compliment (gear), and functioning. ;-)
(Western Physiological Science, and Psychology, seem to know nothing about
these things. They can perhaps produce instruments and tests to DETECT some
such things, but what they lack are the "Subjects", Western people who are open
in this way, and have the practice under their belt, and live like this.
Having no subjects, the Scientists have no reports from people about these
things, and so they never develop the instruments or the tests. If scientists
*do* receive reports, they believe them to be esoteric, superstitious, or an
unsettling threat to the current paradigm of settled science about human beings
(and naturally to their prospects of continued funding if they should dare to
investigate). We thus here have an unfortunate "Catch-22" state of affairs,
for lack of "Subjects" produced in the West. Science is good, here, but
practice is not. It's still very early days, here).
But again, Samadhi is more a Result than a Practice, I'd say.
But it is a Practice! It can't be abandoned if The Nature is to remain
uncovered, and if we are to fulfill our Bodhisattva vows.
I'd better let it go at this point and send my wishes for strong practice.
