joe..don't you dare have a go at thomas merton..he is one of my all time heroes! is edgar sniping? goodness me..is that how you see it joe? please clarify merle
Edgar, Some Christian monastics seclude themselves in order to "intercede for the world". Zen monastics practice in order to "save all beings". I think it's their karma to do so. To make judgements about them, without even knowing a single ONE of them, and suggesting that they busy themselves in a world that you see as more real, I think only shows what YOU should be doing, and where YOU find yourself to be at home, either by default, by lack of imagination, lack of initiative, or masochism. Was Thomas Merton in a fantasy-land all his career? US Army Recruiting says: "Be All You Can Be." They may not use much imagination, but they use initiative. I think you choose -- and that you personally have chosen -- the world you need to live in, and I think, too, that you are continuously shackled by blinders and conditioning, and pulled by threads from the beginningless past. We all are. Just admit it. To snipe at how others live, and why, is just sniping; and it is sad to see, given the facts. I don't criticize you for your life choices, or compulsions, Edgar: I criticize you for Sniping. "Mindlessly meditating" is a good one though, I'll grant! ;-) Something for you to aspire to. "Be All You Can't"! --Joe PS Yes, I note the smile-face at conclusion of your post: some levity for you in return, before your power goes out.
