Estimada Merle,

Chile!, dear Merle. CHILE!

Chile.

The word rolls off my tongue like a last and vast appreciation of my fledgling
youth. Thank God for Chile.

Some say that Chile was an under-developed country, then: you would NOT say
this if you had seen my girlfriends, there!

Everything was love at first sight. My first appreciation of the Southern
Stars, the Magellanic Clouds, Alpha Centauri, Southern Cross, the Coal-Sack,
etc. The vineyards, the wines, the Pisco; the food. The amazing, high desert.
The highest mountains in the Western (and Southern) hemisphere. The clearest
and darkest skies. The greatest indigenous music (they call it folkloric
music). No, no; don't get me started.

I returned to the States to undertake and finish the advanced degree in pure
science. I miss Chile, and the people, and everything else. We made many
discoveries there, and broke new ground that enabled more recent, huge
developments.

Yet, I am also happy in our Arizona desert. Go figure!: I have not returned
South in 3 decades. Been busy on mountaintops, HERE. Working to advance the
state of the art, and to have fun.

I've named an asteroid that I discovered for our favorite Chilean dance, the
Cueca Larga; it is the National Dance of Chile for almost 200 years. The
asteroid is (19348) Cueca; See:

"Chao!", as we say in Chile ("Ciao" in the Italian),
