Often I am tempted to pretend not to perceive the slight - to be all "who is it that could get offended" but that is a bull shit pushing away the sensory reality
This really hit home with me; not long ago I was grieving about something, and I started doing, "who gives a shit", and that felt helpful ... until a friend called and started commiserating with me. I told him, "you have mistaken me for someone who gives a shit", and he cut right through that with: "you can't fool me; I know you care deeply". So I had to face the fact that I was just in denial, and then work out another 'means' until I was able (sorta) to go back to attention.
