William, IMO...
'Zazen' means to 'sit zen' in Japanese and for me ONLY refers to shikantaza, however in Zen Buddhism it can refer to sitting while performing any number of activities such as counting breaths, chanting and working on koans. 'Shikantaza' means 'just sit' in Japanese and for me implies you are only sitting and doing nothing else. This includes thinking. Shikantaza is also referred to as 'clear mind' or 'no mind'.
