Only the Dutch need it, I think. Van Gogh was from Netherlands?
My Dad had a joke, if one of the kids mis-pronounced a word. He'd say, e.g.,
"The 'g' is silent, like the pee in pot".
Van. Van is Van Cliburn's first name.
