IMO the basis of all cultural and societal values and mores are practicality.  
I think problems come in when the needs of the population changes but the 
values and mores are too rigid to adjust to meet them.

I don't think any of these are 'noble', but in fact that the judgment of 
'noble' is itself a cultural or societal value.
