Merle,

It is a basic tenet in Buddhism that all sentient beings have Buddha Nature, 
but humans are in a unique position to follow a path to realise it (not 
withstanding all the waffle about 'there is no path' yadayada). As for 
vegetables, they make a good addition to any Sunday roast.

I believe in zen (and Buddhist) terminology "Buddha Nature" is the same as 
"true essence" in the subject graphic.
