Let's not forget that some of the most prominent
figures in the history of Buddhist practice were
laymen. Vimalakirti being the most famous example,
with Pai Chang treading a close second place. And
there are many more, of course.

Household activities are not in opposition to true
Dharma. It's just that for most people isolation from
the worldly distractions seems like a more reasonable
approach. But once one's mind gains true stability,
one can walk into any situation and still continue the
undisturbed practice.
