Fudo spoke once about the necessity of establishing clear rules
for Zen teaching in the US. I think that the case described in the
article in question clearly demonstrate the need for regulation. Who
is this "Zen teacher" mentioned in the article? How did she become a
Zen teacher? Did she studied during 15 years under the guidance of an
authorized, recognized teacher, or did she simply read a few books on
the issue and decided to start her own sitting group? It seems to me
that the second hypothesis is the case. If I were the author of the
article, I would give Zen a second chance and try to practice with a
better organized sangha.
Now, speaking about Zen mythology, the stories about self-
mutilation are really scary, and they also make me wonder whether Zen
is really a positive spiritual path. Being optimistic, I think this
stories show that we need to be critical of our spiritual heritage,
even as begginers. Discipline and focus are wellcome. Sadism and
maniacal behavior are not. In other words, we have to clever enough
to select what is positive and constructive in the Zen tradition, and
ignore what is negative.
Regards,
Francisco.
