Hi James, For my money, quotes from the canon, or other spiritual texts are not intended to be sources of truth, but rather confirmations of it. So when the truth is known, one can turn to the canon for an often more brief and agreed upon format for communicating what is experienced individually.
But quoting scriptures, or sutras in a disagreement is useless. Often Truth A seems to contradict Truth B, so to use it as a verification of one truth over some other proposition rarely works. Thus when someone leaves it out, I don't thing that anything is missing. Abraham Lincoln said he wouldn't pray that God was on our side, but that we were on his. If we must fight, lets use our fists, or weapons fashioned with our own hands, rather than grab the holy items from the wall... Grabbing them is like asking God/Allah to guide one's bullets... One good thing about Alex, he always quoted or referred to something in the canon so people could judge for themselves how much of what he was saying was just hot air.
