Not so easy, or simple. How you express yourself is
what you are. The recirpocal influence on each other
can't be reduced to "they use the same words or they
both speak Chinese but that's all". Taoist ie. Chinese
sensibilities are carried and formed by the
language/concepts. Look for instance at how both Ch'an
and Taoism view the body or action--not just
philosophically but in practice as well. You won't
find this tone or thought in Indian Buddhism. Of
course if you think Buddhism is what people recite as
their offical Sutra based literalist self definition
there is little connection. But is that Zen--living
Zen? If you really want to look at a possibly
uncomfortable thought ask how much of the actual
tone/feeel of Jap. Zen has Shinto influence. Notions
of Buddhism as pure/uninfluenced, direct from the
source ought to be viewed with the suspicion of "the
pure race" idea. If you are alive you've been
influenced--Bob Dylan. Living Ch'an has been
influenced and has influenced Taoism.Only dead Zen is
pure.
