Folks,
Yesterday, I watched the movie "The Downfall", which narrates
the final days of Adolph Hitler in his bunker, in Berlim.
Is it off-topic to comment on this movie, here? Good question.
From a buddhist viewpoint, it may be considered an interesting
movie, because it demonstrates how far people can go when they become
attached to concepts and ideas.
In a deeper level, it may also be considered interesting because
the people you see in the bunker are human, as we all are. And, in a
sense, you feel empathy for them. On the other hand, you know that
they are envolved with genocide and with an ideology that accepts
brutal and darwinian competion for survival. In short, they look like
possible good neighbors (most of them, at least), and there is this
deep contradiction with the regime that they are involved with. In
this sense, it is a very good movie, because it allows you to
sympathize with the villain, without concealing any details about its
brutality. And that makes you question your own ability to evaluate
people.
Regards,
Francisco.
