OK, so I live in the L.A. area, and I saw that Brad Warner has moved here and started a zen group. He is the author of Hardcore Zen. So, I drove out to Santa Monica to check him out. I have been a zen buddhist for about 17 years, and I have studied formally with a couple of teachers in the White Plum Soto lineage. Well, I was not "taken" with Warner's view on the state of Zen. He did alot of that "shaking his fist" at the establishment thing. Zen tradition is full of that stuff, but his emphasis was more on the rebellion, and less on the answer. He denounced the Zen establishment, and ritual, but then performed ritual in his practice. When I asked him about it, he said it was because his teacher did it that way. The positive, is that he did emphasize zazen, and personal daily practice, which in my mind is the basis of what zen ia all about. He din't have anything fresh to say, but rambled on alot. I appreciate anyone who tries to bring the dharma to those hungry for the truth, but overall, I was left hungry. I will not be going back there again, and would not recomend it to others.
