A wooden plank is alive, depending on how you look at it. It has billions of bacteria, and a wealth of organic material. It has the potential to break down, fertilize, and eventually become any number of things.
Is it as alive as the tree it once belonged to? No. But if self is an illusion - defined only in relation to its surroundings, then a plank must be that way also. To us, it is just a plank, a future table, perhaps. To the itty bitties, it's just wood like any other, full of other itty bitties like themselves, and things that itty bitties find tasty.
