I am new to this group, as well. I have been reading a lot of the files and eavesdropping on the posts to kind of get into the rhythm of the discussions. There is a lot of good information here and I am impressed so far by the respectful way discussions and differences of opinion are handled.
I am still trying to learn how to translate my thoughts and feelings about Buddhism into words so that I can express what feels so right to me I'm hoping eavesdropping on others in this group will help me to learn how to put it into words. I am thinking that, very simply put, that Zen is Buddhism, and that Zen focuses on staying in the *now*. The tool to accomplish that is *meditation*. As long as the person pays complete attention to each moment no matter what the person is doing, that is all that's really necessary. I have read quite a few books about Buddhism, I'm sure not as many as a lot of the folks on this forum, but I have read some. >From those readings, two of my favorite teachers are Dogen and Shunryu Suzuki. I have also been greatly influenced by the down-to- earth talks by the Venerable Samu Sunim of the Buddhist Society for Compassionate Wisdom (particularly Zen Buddhist Temple, Chicago).
