Buddhism is a name given to a means of attaining a direct perception
of reality. There ae three main teaching traditions in Buddhism:
Hinayana, Mahayana and Zen.

In reality there is no Buddhism; no Hinayana, Mahayana or Zen. There
is just this.

The above response was paraphrased from THE COMPASS OF ZEN by Zen
Master Seung Sahn; and offered especially with Normal Milk (a forum
participant) in mind to show him I actually do read books from time to
time.

Bill,

Your answer is too exotic for somebody new to Buddhism/zen. I would say
Buddhism is for somebody who seeks truth without superstition on dogmas as in
other religion. Zen is for somebody who seeks truth without supersitition on
Buddhism itself.
