Hi
I found a Zen community center about 30 minutes from my home and they do
offer the training and Jukai

start a lay-person home based practice or do I have to attend classes?

Of course you can do anything on your own but it is useful to have the
stability and guidance of teachers where you can find them. May I ask
where (approximately) you are located?

I will probably become a formal student of the mountains and Rivers
order, which is located in the Catskill mountains of New York. It's
about a four hour trip for me but I really identified with theh people
there. At some point I will probably take the precepts and become a
student. They have barriers to entry such as attending a full sesshin
for a week (7-8 hours of zazen a day) and doign tangyaro, (dawn to
dusk sitting), and meeting with some of the people there. After that
you take the Jukai.

or something like that..
