Can you try the following in zendmd?
>>> login('VALID_ZOPE_USER')
>>> dmd.Monitors.Performance.localhost.getNagiosCmds()
See if you get a better trace from this.

Seems like there is a funky (non-ascii) character in the xml-rpc
communication. We clearly need to get on this its causing lots of
