If this is the exact error message, it would look like ZENHOME has an
attached CR without LF. Like as if this was reading a DOS formated file,
maybe?

)nable to write to $ZENHOME (/usr/local/zenoss

I say this because the trailing paren was added to the begining of the
line - this error message appears to actually be:

unable to write to $ZENHOME(/usr/local/zenoss"CR") but the "CR" put you
back at the beginning of the line.

  Try this:
  echo $ZENHOME"."
  you should see /usr/local/zenoss.
if, instead, you see .usr/local/zenoss this is your problem.

Re-installing shortly...

I did an echo of ZENHOME to make sure that I hadn't typoed the confing file
or whatnot, which would also should have shown in the output file if I
had... Basically, none of the simple answers to the simple problem seem to
pan out.

Will update. Thanks again for your attention and patience, it is much
apprecaited.

Nah, UNIX doesn't differentiate between / and // in the path.
