We tried to set up a minimal CentOS install and it was like 400MB (or
something large). In comparison the rPath image is around 175MB iirc.
So we decided to stick with rPath until something else presented
itself. as an option.

We talked about doing a LiveCD (ala Knoppix).
The problem is that for Zenoss to be really usable you have to load
devices into it, and that requires a disk that's persistent across
reboots. I think some LiveCD utilities out there can mount an
existing filesystem and make a small snapshot file that is offered up
through a block level loopback device you can mount and write to.
But configuring all that wasn't intuitive the last time we checked.
Plus we'd also have to push the MySQL database, the ZODB database,
and the perf files onto this filesystem (and currently those are in 3
separate directories). Yes you could solve that with symbolic links
and config changes... But we're rapidly getting into the world of
"this isn't a 5 second thing to do", and there are other things we're
trying to do to push the project forward.
The VMWare is a pretty reasonable compromise of convenience and
usability. Sure you can use it for production if you wanted to, or
you could also just use it for a quick 1 week eval.
Anyhow... we're always looking for volunteers - if you have some
spare cycles and would like to prepare a LiveCD we'd love it! :)

something like that that people can put on a standard machine or
vmware
box to alleviate the install hassle.
