Hi Marco,
Zenoss is moving in that scattered/heterogeneous network direction,
and 2.0 gets us a lot closer to it. There are going to be some
features in 2.0 that will make it easier to compose logical views of
the network on the dashboard (think: dashboard rollups). Distributed
collection in 2.0 will also be a lot easier and a lot more efficient
than in 1.1.
We're going to beta soon (hopefully next week). I suggest you give
the beta a shot to see how far it can get you.

Hi all,
I'm evaluating various Network Monitoring System for a rather
heterogeneous network environment and I have some need that I haven't
found properly addressed in other NMSs.
I've read some of the Zenoss documentation, but I haven't yet
understood
if it does something of what I need, can someone please enlighten me?
Some of my needs which I believe are peculiar are the following:
- ability to monitor remote hosts which are NAT-ed or firewalled. I
bet
I can do that using some ssh tunneling, but I would rather like to
know if I can install some Zenoss monitoring agents on such hosts
and
have them "call back" the monitoring station where I'm running the
Zenoss web interface
- ability to have different views over a large/scattered network.
Consider for example a wide geographical network made up of several
LANs. Each LAN should be monitored locally by an "internal" (from
the
point of view of the LAN) Zenoss installation used by the local
sysadm. Nonetheless I would like to have *also* a global monitoring
station for the whole geographical network which should gather
monitoring information from all the local Zenoss installations.
More generally I need to understand how much "distributed" is
Zenoss,
that's something I haven't yet grasped from the doc I've read so
far.
Note that this multi-level hierarchical architecture might be needed
not only for the sake of it, but also because it often happens that
the local monitoring instances can have access to more services to
those that might be available from the centralized monitoring
station...
Many thanks in advance for the information you can give me on these
topics.
Cheers.
Marco
