It looks like they broke it when moving away from a 'sudo' requirement.  There 
is a 'zensocket' setuid binary that appears to open a socket and then drop 
privs to zenoss user.

Good advice, but the docs for 1.x say you must run zendisc as root in order to 
open the icmp socket.  I think zensocket is the way they get around that in 
2.x.  

I did some traces, no icmp packets are generated by zendisc, so it's probably a 
permissions issue...  Meanwhile i'm going to look at building the zenoss xml 
file format manually and import the nodes.
