I think I made progress. I created a filter for my email alerts. The filter is for "messages" and it "does not contain" the words "is up" (I used quotes in the text box for the email filter). I then restarted the ping daemon (that may have been useless) and I haven't received an up/cleared message since, even though I can see in the ping log file that Zenoss is still generating the errors. This doesn't fix the problem, but at least Zenoss doesn't bury me in a zillion emails telling me my servers are up.
