yea i know the feeling, and the zenoss people don't want anything to do with you unless you pay, but if i can get this working then i might pay... i might just switch back to hyperic since their product albeit painful has agents which only require one distinct port... :( but trust me only as a last resort. thanks again for your help.

There are a lot of different ways to distribute Zenoss. The most common is to only distribute the performance monitoring parts. This includes all monitoring except for zenping, zenmodeler, zendisc, zentrap and zensyslog. In this configuration the remote performance monitor connects back to the central server using only port 8789/tcp (zenhub.)

If you want FULLY distributed monitoring there are a number of additional ports that need to be opened up. This is due to the fact that the daemons mentioned above have not yet been ported to the ZenHub architecture. These ports need to be opened from the remote monitor to the central server: 8100/tcp (ZODB), 3306/tcp (MySQL). Setting this configuration up at the moment isn't exactly trivial. As all of the daemons are moved to the ZenHub architecture this will get a lot easier.
