After experiencing these same issues on 2 fresh CentOS 5 installs, I noticed that even though I had chosen SELinux "permissive mode" during install it was logging items being blocked. I removed the zenoss folders, turned SELinux completely off, rebooted, and the installation went perfectly (2.1 rpm) and all services started first time. No issues with ZOPE at all. It looks like SELinux is at the heart of this problem.
