I had problems from the command line too. I decided to try again from scratch, so built a new virtual host (on Xen) and installed from source. This installation works fine, and even got rid of another problem that was annoying me (WMI problems).
I think the problems could have been due to a firewall issue on the original virtual server's physical host.
