it sort of figured itself out. I stopped the services for afew hours, then 
restarted then (along with a tcpdump, which I've since killed). Haven't had the 
problem since, go figure. makes perfect sense to a former Windows admin :)

As for your issue, over an ADSL segment, I'd up the timeout a second or so.

I'm having  a few other niggling issues, but I'll post them in a new post.
