I didn't have to do anything special to turn them on, but finally had to turn them off due to the volume of events. I'm beginning to believe that I have some sort of issue with the mysql/zenoss integration. More often then not its not letting me acknowledge the events even though zenoss is updating the history of the even to say "acknowledged" or "deleted"
