Well, yes. Just create a separate class or subclass, and set WMI polling
to ignore on the Workstations. I believe SNMP (if you use informant?)
will get you software, maybe I'm ignorant though?
However, I really think this ought to scale more. Submit a bug with Zenoss.
As a sort of tangential idea, I'd really recommend looking into OCSNG
1.01 or 1.02RC1 if you don't mind pushing a client to the desktops. This
really does scale for 400 + (they claim 50,000) systems running varied
OSs for inventory. I'm not sure I'd really want to try and get large
numbers of systems into Zenoss right now just for software/hardware
inventory.

Thank you James. I have rebuilt Zenoss with a couple of changes, 1) configured Mysql for large databases, and two, have applied your suggestions.
The result is a better performance, but the errors keep coming, this time at 6
minute intervals (instead of default 60 sec).
I wonder if there is a way to separate the few Window servers from all the XP
workstations, and fully monitor the servers only. My only need as far the XP
machines is concerned is the software and hardware inventory.
