I ran into the same problems. I ended up having to uninstall zenoss completely, reset the mysql root password to blank and then reinstalling. The zenoss install process creates tables and propogates the password to several other scripts during installation. If this doesn't get done, zenoss will never run properly. I am open to any other feedback but the fastest way was to get a fresh start with a blank root mysql password.
