That does sound quite bizarre. SNMP has functionality called Agent X. My limited understanding is that it allows other SNMP agents on a system to function as sub agents to a master agent. This was made to prevent the exact problem you are describing.
Depending on the product you might want to press the vendor to do things in a more reasonable way (ie, agentx).
