Marc, thanks. In the meanwhile I've just copied the check_dns binary from the old installation into the new libexec directory and it seems to work fine.
FWIW, this is not just something specific to my installation, as "dpkg -c ./zenoss-stack_2.2.0-0_i386.deb | grep check_dns" returns nothing.
