Would it be possible, to just extend the Zenoss Standard Model with Layer 2 information in one of the upcoming releases? There are a lot of tools available to gather Layer 2 information and it's currently extremely inconvenient that there is no standardized way to store that information in the Zenoss CMDB. You can write your own extensions if you want too, but you surely will run into troubles as soon as Zenoss starts to support Layer 2 discovery. Zenoss already collects Device Interface MAC Addresses and Switch Port Names.
