I'm in a similar position here. I've been using Zenoss since 2.0. Had to start over once after a failed upgrade, and my "production" instance currently can't install ZenPacks.
My company has already decided to go ahead and pay for Orion, so thats what my time and efforts are going to shift to. I do plan to maintain a Zenoss install for my own benefits and learning, and also finish out some Novell related Zenpacks.
