Not 100% sure that this will remain fixed, but I the server I was testing was a DC, so (JUST TO TEST) I used an account that had domain admin privs for the WMI connection. At first this didn't work, the WMI state would always go green after clearing the event, but then turn red at the next poll cycle. I restarted all zenoss services (overkill but hey..) and WMI is stable so far. Even getting events from the windows event log.
The next trick will be to figure out how to give appropriate permissions to an account while maintaing security.
