I'd try setting the 'count' variable for your alert. If you have a count of 3 consecutive ping failures in a row, then alert you. As Chet said, it may be a lot more sensitive than your other tools. This is a way of tuning some of the sensitivity down. Sometimes alerting on the first instance of a failure is too much.
