2 things:
1, there is a typo in the final example in the Admin Guide:
if evt.component == '/data' and evt.severity != 0:
evt.severity == 5
It needs to be
if evt.component == '/data' and evt.severity != 0:
evt.severity = 5
note the bottom line, one = ...

Specifically xzp5jj showed you can use
evt.summary = evt.laErrMessage
but you could use other variables, say evt.details (IIRC)...
