For what you want, Zenoss ought to work out of the box. Assuming you're
running RHEL5, you can just run the stack installer, and add the
computers you want uptime on manually (as there's only 22), and use ping
monitoring rather than SNMP. You could use autodiscovery or one of the
batchloaders, but that's adding config complexity IMO.
As long as your host firewalls allow pings from the Zenoss computer
you're ok.
If you look here:
http://www.zenoss.com/community/docs/zenoss-guide/2.2.4/ch10s04.html
and select NONE for the discovery protocol, it should just work. Oh,
well, one thing, you need to be able to resolve the computers via DNS.
If you don't have DNS running, I believe you can work around this by
putting each computer you want to monitor in the Zenoss server's hosts file.

Hello, I am a university student who is working on a networking project for the
Computer Science Department. I have 22 PC's running Red Hat Linux. An
experiment is going to be run on the network where nodes will be emulating
downtime. I intended to run Zenoss (or other network monitoring software) in
parallel fashion to merely confirm the resulting data from the experiment by
reporting all nodes were actually active and therefore the data was not
corrupted.
I have Zenoss 2.2.4 installed and running(?) on one of the nodes and am having
trouble setting it up. I only need to set up a way for Zenoss to keep track if
any of the nodes actually go down during the experiment. I am having alot of
trouble setting Zenoss up. I can access Zenoss Core through the web browser,
but I am beginning to wonder if I should be using something with less
capability, (maybe Nagios?).
Any help or advice would be appreciated!
