I'm in exactly the same situation - a number of machines on a VPN with private internal addresses and a public internet address. Doing all snmp over VPN, so have added them based on that address, but would like to add public IP check (perhaps some services on it) so we can see if it is the VPN link or internet connection that is down.
I tried adding an IP service on the live IP, but it seems that when the internal IP is not responding, the server is marked as 'down' and none of the other checks get run anymore.
