It is possible. I just tested it and it works just the way you want. Now I only used "beep" which umm...beeps, but I bet if you played with it you could get the beeps to sound like a ringer. Or you could find some WAV/MP3 of a phone ringing and play that with some command line audio app.
I'm using Ubuntu so... 1. install beep with apt-get install beep 2. add the zenoss user to the audio group which has permission to run beep with usermod -a -G audio zenoss (I had to restart Zenoss for this to take effect) 3. try out some beeps until you find one of your liking (man beep) - I used /usr/bin/beep -f 523.2 -r 2 -d 100 -l 100 4. create an Event Command from within Zenoss Event Manager->Commands (I called mine "critical_beep") 5. add a filter for the Severity and make sure you set "Enabled" to true I tested it by creating a low threshold on one of my nics and set the severity to critical. Of course for this to really work you need to be near the zenoss server and be able to hear the beep...
