Have you changed any of the retry and or timeout counts for the ping 
tests in monitors?

And you mean the event showing up at all in the console, or an alert 
e-mail? Alerts are only scanned every minute, and all the e-mail delay 
possibilities...

You may also want to check I/O perf stats for your Zenoss server, events 
do a bunch of transforms etc (possibly) and then have to insert to the 
MySQL database - is there any slowdowns there?
