I'd probably recommend using Zenoss for always on systems, it's really designed for by the minute uptime monitoring and alerting. If you just want to know what hardware / software is on a desktop/laptop, you're better of (right now at least) using a different product I think. Especially with Zenoss's current hardware demands for near real time monitoring.
I've said before in this forum, but I think the OCSNG + GLPI suite complements Zenoss quite well for the inventory sorts of things it doesn't yet do (and isn't really focused on IMO). I run OCSNG + GLPI on the same Zenoss server, and they are barely noticable, they also use the same MySQL instance and they use Apache, which I use with Zenoss to get SSL to Zenoss. I currently get inventory information from Windows 2k, XP, Server 2003, NT4, and a RHEL4 and 5 derivative. I understand that with some configuration, the agent can work on Vista and betas of Windows 7. Anyway, tangent complete. -- James Pulver Information Technology Area Supervisor LEPP Computer Group Cornell University jedward wrote, On 3/25/2009 5:56 PM: > dagar wrote: >> What is the best way to monitor desktops/laptops such that I don't get >> alerts if the machine is off but I can still list the software/hardware that >> is installed? >> Or should I just stick to always on network equipment and servers? >> Thanks >> Derek > > > Well, the way I've done it is to set them to decommissioned, that way the > device is still in Zenoss, but does not appear in Events...
