A few quick questions, maybe we can get some debugging traction on this.

1) you said you had $ZENHOME set, I assume this was for the zenoss user, not 
root?

2) if you still have the RPMs you installed with, can you check the MD5:
55faa68baf12120eaeb0c4a2a79a8453  ./zenoss-2.4.0.el5.x86_64.rpm

3) I assume you followed the steps from the Installation Guide:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/zenoss/Zenoss_Core_Installation_2.4.0.pdf.zip

We haven't seen anything like this, so we're looking to see if we can get to 
the bottom of it.
