it may also be possible to get the information you want about events in logfiles by using built-in functionality of snmp - you can put entries into /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf using the 'logmatch' keyword, which will perform a grep and return a count of matching lines.

i discussed this (and gave some examples) in a previous thread entitled 'mailscanner monitoring' - you may find further information / documentation on this feature in that thread and by doing 'man smnpd.conf' at a prompt.
