Here's what I've discovered so far... If you manually add a device, there is an option called "Discovery Protocol". Setting this option as "none" seems to block zenmodeler events during discovery. I'll have to wait to see if the systems tries something during scheduled re-models.
This option does not appear in zProperties or other device editable parameters.
