Sounds like you fundamentally DO have ping and SNMP access so the problem is with performance data. What Op Sys are the devices running? If it is Win then the standard performance data rely on the Informant MIB being installed on the target devices - which you probably don't have? Check the device template that is bound to your device(s) and see if it is trying to get a MIB value that starts 1.3.6.1.4.1.9600 - that's the informant MIB.
Another test would be to drill into the OS tab for these devices and then click on an active interface - you should see interface performance graphs here. These graphs use the standard MIB-2 so data should be available. If you don't want to install the Informant MIB and do have WMI on the target devices, try getting the WMI Data Source and WMI Windows Peformance ZenPacks from http://www.zenoss.com/community/projects/zenpacks/ - they provide similar data (you will also need to ensure that the WMI traffic is not blocked by your firewall).
