My feeling here is that gossip protocols differ a lot from any pattern that is currently supported in 0MQ (pub/sub, req/rep etc.) If you want to fix that you can design a new pattern aimed at that kind of thing. To do that, you should have a clear idea of what are the invariants of gossip protocols and how they can be mapped to 0MQ semantics.
