KOLLAM: The general secretary of the National Campaign for Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR), J. Vincent Manoharan, on Saturday alleged that Dalit victims of the December 26 tsunami devastation were being totally sidelined from the rehabilitation programme.
At a press conference here, Mr. Manoharan alleged that it was part of a conspiracy against Dalits.
He said it was unfortunate to note that the focus given by the rehabilitation programme to the fishing community was not being given to the Dalits. He demanded that houses be constructed for Dalits too under the tsunami rehabilitation programme.
Stating that the NCDHR would strengthen its campaign for the purpose, he called for transparency on all aspects relating to the rehabilitation programme. In Kollam, there were 257 Dalit families who houses had been fully or partially damaged in the tsunami. His organisation would campaign for effecting a proper monitoring system of the rehabilitation programme.
He said the NCDHR had prepared a 100-page dossier on the status of Dalits in the tsunami rehabilitation programme and that the same would be entrusted to the National Human Rights Commission for appropriate action.
Mr. Manoharan said he would meet the Kollam Collector, B. Sreenivas, in this connection.
